When I'm at sea and use my cannon on an enemy I gain something called proficiency. How do I know how much proficiency I've got? I've never been able to find where that stat is accumulating. Also, what good is it doing me? I don't get the impression that my cannon is hitting harder, faster or more often. Does it actually mean anything? Just curious.

It is ship exp.U get ship exp and then u can lvl up your ship at builder
No this is different than ship exp. I can track that and I can see it accumulate. I only get proficiency when I use my cannon and the ships exp does not go up from it. It has to be something else.

It is ship experience. At approx 1000ish ship exp your ship will stop accumulating experience just from sailing. Kill something and youll see it go up. Momorazor is an experienced player dont just dismiss his answer because you didnt notice its actually ship experience

Will watch it closely next time I play out at sea.

Mystery solved. Didn't notice that my xp from just sailing stopped around 1000. By that point, I was going out to train on enemies so much that my ship xp kept going up at a similar rate. Add to that a bit of lag and it looks like proficiency isn't doing anything. Thanks for the answers guys. Now I know to just keep doing what I'm doing.

thinking about it, its kinda weird how the ship exp stops at 1000....but i guess thats how its always been :/

Yeah, otherwise it'd be fairly easy to just keep the ship sailing for a few hours for ez lvl 100 ship xD

Proficiency exp is accumulated as Life skill exp.

For Ships that is Fishing and Salvage , rewards items like fish/treasure/porcelain can be traded

resold for gold.

SeaVoy level up using Ships at sea battles.

Most of this is incorrect.
Proficiency does not equate to life skill experience you only get that from story quest.

Yes you can trade porcelain and the like for good if you do commerce.

Seavoys don't level up by fighting in sea battles. You level the char alone and the ship is leveled up by consuming experience at port builders. That experience is accumulated to a cap by just sailing and then to further increase experience you must kill mobs with your ship this is in the form of proficiency.
