First Wish
arm sunlight kisses my skin. I open my eyes to see a red-haired girl looking back at me with her hazel eyes. “She must be lonely”, I think to myself. I inhale fresh humid air, only to realize that the girl was me. “God, I need tea with omnipotent herb”, I jump off my bed and head to the kitchen. “Mom, do you need anything?” I call out inside our house. No answer. “Mom?”, And again, no one answers. I pace towards my mother’s room to see her barely breathing. “Mom? What’s wrong? Mom?”, I kneel before her bed. “Your skin is so pale”, I stare at her. “And your temperature is off the roof!”,I say as I cup her hands. She doesn’t answer.
It takes me less than a second to run outside the house, not even wearing slippers as I trudge on the streets of Argent City.
“Are you here?” I knock 3 times before the door opens. “Cate?”says Ditto in a curious manner. “Our lesson doesn’t start yet until 5 pm. “Ditto! I’m so glad you’re here. It’s mom, she’s so sick that she can hardly breathe, and her temperature is sky-rocketing!” I say hurriedly, as if I only had one minute more to live.
“I’ve been waiting here for 1 hour already, what is taking them so long?” I worry. I’d have already paced 50 times, walking back and forth outside my mother’s room, and finally the door opens. “Cate, come in”, says a familiar voice. “High Priest Gannon! You’re here!” I run to hug him. “Love, no need for the formalities.” He smiles, a little. “Uncle, how’s mother?”I turn my face to see Ditto still checking her. “My dear, your mother is very sick. So much, that even with my healing capabilities, and yours, that it would only slow down her condition.” His voice giving emphasis on every word. “No,no ,no. This can’t be true. What use am I? Why did I even become a cleric if I can’t even help my own mother!”, I fight back the tears, facing down, trying to hide my face as if they can’t see it already. “There must be a way, there must be!”,I shove my curled fist onto my mother’s bed.
“Well, there is the-“ “No! Not that, Ditto do not tell her!”, Uncle Gannon interrupts Ditto.
“What is it, tell me” I run to Uncle Gannon “ Tell me, tell me please , I would do anything for mother. Please Uncle, please tell me!” I demand as I hold his arms as tightly as I can, hoping that with enough force, it would persuade him.
“There is something. But it would be far too dangerous.” He sighs. “I don’t care. I want to know what it is.”, I reply. “There is a grass said to be able to cure any illness.” “Where? Where is it? Where can I find it?” I urge him. “Crusaders say the plant only grows in the Demonic World. There is a portal which leads you to it, found in the icy hills above Thundoria”. As soon as he finished saying the last word, I run to my room and prepare for my mission, for my mother.
“I’ll be back, Mom” I bid farewell outside our house.
Making my way past Argent, running through the outskirts, through Rockery, through the deep dark Andes Forest, through Valhalla, and through Chaldea, passing different monsters and seeing different landscapes all over the land of Ascaron.
“It’s been 1 day and a half, I need to pick up my pace” I remind myself as I hurry walk on the streets of Thundoria. “What a beautiful place, I never knew Thundoria was this amazing!", I acknowledge the firm buildings made with bricks and detailed manufacturing. “But no beautiful place would be enough to replace my mother”, looking at the castle north of Thundoria.
"Where the hell is he, I’ve been looking for him for 30 minutes already”, I draw my breath. With a moment’s notice, I see Ditto on the corner of my eye, behind him a store.. “What is he doing in Thundoria? And how the hell did he make it here before I did?”. I ask myself.“Ditto? Why are you here. What happened to mother?” I run towards him. “Young lady, I believe you have the wrong person.”, He eyes me with curiosity. “I’m Kudu, Ditto’s twin brother”. “I never knew Ditto had a twin.”, I say with shock. “He doesn’t really share anything much about his life.” He smiles, but I can see the irritation on his face. “ What are you looking for?” Kudu asks. “I’m looking for the grocer, have you seen him?” I answer. “Honey you’re looking at him.” He laughs, pointing a finger on his chest. “Finally! I need a lot of things.” I shout with relief. “What things?” “Items that will help me in my journey in Demonic World.” “Hahahah, enough with the jokes honey, now tell me honestly, what do you need?” “I told you. I need items for my journey in Demonic World” I stare at him sternly, hoping he'd listen. "Alright. What do you need?” he relents. “A lot” I smile at him.
“Cake, Agryptonics,Apple, and, finally Gyozas” , Kubu says as he places them inside a bag made of wolf skin. “I appreciate it”, I thank him. “Hikers going through the mountains have heard of loud beastly screams echoing along the Sacred Snow Mountains, as if there was a battle raging underneath the mountains, so be careful” Kubu pats my shoulder. “Mom please stay strong" I say under my breath. “What?” “No, it’s nothing. Thank you for your care.” I force the biggest smile i can muster and move out.
It takes me another day, trudging on snowy mountains, when i finally find the portal. “This is it. There’s no going back. Wait for me for just a little while more Mom” I try to calm myself. But my heart is beating so loud, I fear snow wolves might hear it. With one breath, I make the biggest decision that will change my life, forever.
The cold pierces my skin, as if winter herself was trying to steal my life force.I blink five times, till I believe what’s happening right in front of me.Crystalline walls as high as skyscrapers extend up from the frozen terrain, passageways on every corner. But that's not all. Beasts in chaos, blood. So much blood."What the hell!” I scream. The moment I do, large hands spring out from behind me and cover my mouth. “Stay calm, I won’t harm you”,A voice behind me says, dragging me behind a statue of a wolf made of ice. “Stay quiet, or you’ll get their attention” The owner of the voice uncovers my mouth. “You’re not a person!” I squeal, seeing what appears to be a human-like boy with thick hairy green skin with two horns sprouting from his head and two fangs protruding from his mouth. “No, duh, I’m a Snowman” He says with a bored expression, looking like I should have known what he was from the start. “The name is Yaze” he offers a hand. “Yara” I lie, shaking his hand. I was about to ask him a question until a ghostly scream rang loudly towards us. Immediately , Yaze dashes in front of me, carrying a large club. “Why didn’t I see you carrying that huge thing till now” I ask, staring past him to the coming ice spirit. “Don’t you ever shut up?” He replies, not bothering to look at me. “It’s a snow doll, one of Her minions.” He tells me as he runs towards the snow doll. Yaze dodges to the right as the doll hurls an icy breath at him. “Good reflexes” I compliment. "Kruugh!" The doll attacks again, this time , a lot faster. “Argh!” Yaze groans, barely dodging the second attack. He holds the club firmly and forces out all of his might, smashing it on the doll’s neck. “Yaze!” I run towards him. “Are you okay?” I ask. “Are you seriously blind?” he retorts. “Alright alright, sorry, stay still” I focus on my spirit, imagining a power from deep within me. I hold the power and wish it to my will, then cast the healing skill. "That feels so much better. You have some use after all” , He twirls his healed arm, good as new. “I’m a Cleric, healing is what I do.” “Sureeeeeeeee, you are”
He says, making a face. “So what are you doing in Demonic World? Humans like you aren’t supposed to be here.” He asks. “I traveled far from Argent. I came here looking for a herb.” I explain. “For a plant? You must be in over your head coming to a place like this for a plant. And you chose a perfect time too. We’re at war.” Yaze answers. “It’s not just a plant.” I punch his arm. “I’m looking for a plant that is said to heal all wounds” I explain further. “Demonic Grass! It’s located at Her lair though.” Yaze yanks my arm, taking me with him. “Wait wait wait. Who’s Her?” I squint at him. “The Ice Queen, also known as Wandering Soul, the leader of the enemy we’re at war with” He walks faster. “War? What war, and where are you taking me?” “Yes.War. Long has the ice in Demonic World been a source of power for our kingdoms. Yet, during the red Moon, the caps started to melt, and Wandering Soul wants it all for herself, and my Dad doesn’t like what she’s planning",He pulls me into a cavern with only a bonfire giving it light. “Yaze, I don’t have much time. My mother is dying of an unknown disease, and my healing powers aren’t enough to cure her. I need that herb” I hold his hands tightly. Giving him a desperate nudge. “Okay, fine. I can help you sneak in, but we need to hurry, another battle is coming up.” Yaze looks at my grip on him.I thought i saw him blush, It must be my imagination. “What deep blue eyes", I think to myself.
"I'm so dead, no, we're so dead" , i look at Yaze. "We have one out of 100 chances at pulling this off" , Yaze examines the snow dolls guarding the entrance. "Yaze" I hold the staff he lent me."Can we really do this?" i ask. "Be positive" he reminds me. "I'm am positive. Positive we're gonna be dead meat" i whisper behind his ear.
"So, do you remember the plan? I distract them, while you go inside and get the Demonic Grass" "I can do this. I can do this. I can't do this" I burry my head between my hands. "Yara" , He cups my right hand in his "I believe in you"
"Go!" Yaze shouts from behind me, surrounded by dolls.
I jolt and run like an elk towards the entrance. "Shit shit shit"
In a matter of seconds, I make it inside the ice chamber, heaving. "Now i have to find her throne room" I walk past corridors for minutes to no end when I see a fountain, with water coming up from who-knows-where. "There it is!" ,Pointing at a herb held by a glass on a throne.
My hands are trembling, and in a flash i run, run with all my energy, praying that my feet will take me home, holding the herb that would save my mother. "Forgive me,Yaze"
"Why can't i do it" I stare at the portal, inches away from me. "Why can't i, why can't i leave" I keep on asking myself. "Yaze is probably fine" I don't believe my words. "He doesn't need me, he can protect himself." Still, i don't believe myself.
I sprint, not looking back at the portal, the distance increasing every second. "Yaze, Yaze,Yaze"
It feels like a knife is stabbing me every second we're away. "Yaze, where are you?" I ask my reflection on the ice beneath my feet. No one answers. "Yaze where are you?" I scream loudly into the cold abyss. Another minute passes. Then another. And another. And another.
"Damn it" A voice reverberates on the walls. "This is where it ends for me, damn."
"It's Yaze!"I felt like someone gave me life again.I rush towards the corner and find Yaze, heavily wounded and lying on his back. Pointing his club at the snow dolls surrounding him. "Yaze!" I pass the monsters, as if He was the only one i see. "Are you okay?" i hold him steadily. "Now I'm sure, you're seriously blind." He jokes, hiding the pain. Once again, i call out the power inside me, releasing it, using it, begging it to save Yaze. I stand, holding my staff up and in an instant tremendous energy wells up from within me. Green light enveloping Yaze.
"I can take it from here,Yara" He stands in front of me, wounds gone, like they weren't there in the first place. "No, i won't sit by and watch anymore" I say, my voice more confident than it had ever been.
"Wohoo", Yaze smashes his club behind an enemy doll's back, knocking it unconscious."Yara, behind you!" He warns me. I roll to the right, dodging the doll who was seconds away from killing me. I need an opening.
It attacks me again. "Gotcha" I evade to the right, revealing a hard wall behind me. "Skrtch" The doll slams its head directly to the brick of the wall. "4 down, 3 to go" Yaze calls out.
"Watch where you're going blind Yara" Yaze teases, our backs directly on each other. The three ice spirits encircle us, preparing for an attack. "You take the bigger one, i'll handle the other-" "Attack!" Yaze interrupts me, not bothering to listen to my plan. Idiot."You're not the only one taking the fun Yeti boy!"
We're both exhausted, eating cakes and using agryptonics on the bare ice for minutes trying to regain the energy we just lost. "That was fun!" Yaze laughs. "I know! Let's never do that again!" I smile back sarcastically. "Wandering Soul should have already noticed that someone stole the Demonic Grass." "She'll go berserk, that grass was her most prized possession" Yaze says, slapping his legs from laughter. "We need to get out of here then" I get up. "My dad's friends are coming to get escort us back, they should find us sooner or later."Yaze walks beside me. "Thanks a lot Yaze, i wouldn't be able to get this herb..." i say, looking down at it "...without you" We look at each other , smiling.
Before i could say another word, an icy chill envelops the environment around us. "She found us" Yaze stretches an arm in front of me. A piercing shreak comes out from behind us. "Thieves! You dare take what is mine?", A bigger, more elegant ice doll hovers above the ice, wearing a refine crystal gown, an intricate headdress on her head. I freeze. The aura around her is not like the others. A darker evil. Never have i felt a sensation as deadly as this."Yaze, i'm scared" "I am too, for you" He looks at me and tenderly caresses the palm of my hand.I don't know why my heart is beating so fast."Its probably because of fear of dying" i think to myself. "She looks scary, plus a battalion behind her, so yeah" I joke around, trying to change the awkward moment between the two of us.
"Freeze to oblivion!" , Wandering Soul sends a freezing wind at us. We both shift in time. "How can she freeze ice?" I look at where her attack landed. "Yara, support me from behind, ill manage the front" "Yaze, together. remember?" I stand beside him. He nods back at me.
I will my spirit once more, focusing energy to my staff.
I fortify Yaze's strength to crush the even the most solid of rocks.I harden his skin, to be as impenetrable as an emerald shield.I boost his speed, to that even faster than the tempest.
"Let's do this" we both say at the same time. We charge at the incoming dolls. Yaze leaps in front, and slams three dolls to the left wall effortlessly. Two suddenly hurl a frost breath towards me from behind me. "I can't dodge it in time!" I closey eyes and wrap my arms across my head. I don't feel anything. I turn my face up and see a shield made out of energy surrounding me.I hold my staff tight, slamming it against them."Better than a hammer" I weigh it in my hand
"We've been fighting for minutes! There's no end to them, they’re too many" I scan the 30 dolls encircling us. "Playtime is over." Wandering Soul chuckles from behind a legion of spirits. They combine their attack and hit us the same time."Yaze, i can't hold up the shield much longer" I crumble on my knees, my staff the only thing keeping me from falling. "Yara!" He bawls, encompassing me in between his arms. "I wish i met you in my life much earlier. I feel a connection to you which i never felt before" I fight back the tears. "Yara, I won't let anything happen to you, they have to go over my lifeless body before they can get to you" Yaze holds me tighter. "Did you fall in love with me?" "Maybe", he answers "Gross", I giggle.
"I'm sorry Mom" I picture mother smiling. Just as my shield was about to fade, the ground trembled. An earthquake? No, its a stampede! "father!" Yaze calls out. I gape at an army of Yeti clash against the snow dolls, making their way to us. I recognize another green-skinned in the middle of the horde, who appears to be leading the attack.
"father! over here", Yaze calls out louder in the direction of the green Yeti, who's face turned into a mixture of anger, and fear when he saw him. "My son!",The Green Yeti shouts from afar, pulverizing every snow doll he passes."Warlord, you have made a foolish mistake, coming here"Wandering Soul says to the Green Yeti, carrying a sharp frozen sword. "Wandering Soul, I will not let your selfish desires endanger both our kingdoms"He replies. The two creatures exchange attacks, parrying each other's assault. "Let's have a truce", Wandering Soul grins. "I will not trust a witch like you anymore",The Warlord replies. "After weeks of fighting, i have come to realize that we should share the power of the Ice Caps, fairly",She walks around the Warlord. "Very well,I am delighted of your decision"The Warlord nods."Truce?"Wandering Soul offers a hand.I notice her casting a spell behind her back, oblivious to the Yeti Warlord as he walks near, about to take her hand for the truce."It's a trap! Look out" I scream, hoping my voice would reach the unsuspecting Warlord. I start to breathe again when he hears me in time, using his club to protect himself from the ice spell. With a loud the Wandering Soul is sent flying, taking a direct hit from the Warlord's counterattack."I want to be as strong as Father someday, and as good a King too" Yaze says, in awe.But not as much amazed as I am."Wait, what? Father?King?" I point towards the Warlord. Yaze smiles.
I wanted to ask more, but i see the Ice Queen slowly getting up.
"You, little girl, this is all your fault! I will not let you get away with this atrocity, no one steals from The Ice Queen and get's away with it!" She says as she dashes towards me, carrying a a newly formed sword, aiming it at me ."Die!"
Blood drips to my clothes. But it is not mine."Yaze! No, please" I cradle his dying body "No, don't die! We just met, we were going to have more fun together, and and.." I can barely talk from the fear engulfing my heart. "Yara" , He strokes my face with his thumb "Thank you. Thank you for giving me the best day of my life. I would give all my years, if it meant spending another day with you" His hand falls. "No! Yaze!" I scream. "Haha! This is even better than killing you!" Wandering Soul laughs, a wicked grin on her face. I stand, laying Yaze's head down gently. I feel rage. I feel anger. My heart feels like its going to burst from the pain. But i don't care if it does.I face up, staring straight at the Ice Queen, eye to eye. Power surges from within me. So much that i feel it erupting out from my skin.I hold on to it, taming it. I become power. I pour all of my power into my staff, compressing it into a single point. "Killing you won't be enough" I tread towards the direction of Yaze's murderer. "Wait, forgive me, i didn't know what i was thinking, i make mistakes, let me live, please", Wandering soul begs,Her hands pressed to the wall. I shape the energy into a circular flame. And with one hand, I shove all my magic, all my fury to Her. "Mercy", she screams a as bolts of spiritual energy collides with her. "Melt" i say, looking down at her shreaking in agony as the fire eats away at her flesh.
"Human girl", a voice brings me back to reality. I see the Snowman Warlord holding Yaze's lifeless body. "Do something, heal him" He speaks. I can hardly make out his words because of the tears.
."I can't do anything, its too late. And if he were still alive, i would not be able to heal a wound such as this", I fall to my knees. "My son, my poor son", the Snowman Warlord bawls.
"The Demonic Grass!"I say. "It can heal all wounds and afflictions"I take a glass out of my pocket, the Grass in perfect form contained within. "Use it" He urges me, a newfound hope giving him energy. I take the Grass out gently. "Mother" I realize. "What about your mother?" "I came here to find the Demonic Grass so i could cure her of an incurable disease that has plagued her",I wail. "Mother, please forgive me"I whimper once more.
"Dear human girl, there is something you have misinterpreted." He says. I wipe off my tears, but more keep pouring. "The Demonic Grass can do so much more than heal.It is said to be able to grant the purest of wishes", Yaze's father beckons me to use it.
I clutch the Demonic Grass in my palms wet with tears. "Grant my heart the wishes it desires, please" I grip it firmly.
In a blinding light, mystical power flows from the herb."What's happening", I gape. Yaze's body transforms into light, surrounding us, then disappears. "Yaze!" We cry out.
3 days later
"I'm home", i enter our house, running as fast as i can. "Mom?". No one answers.
"Mom?", I shout desperately. No one answers.
"Oh Mother" I fall to the ground, cupping my face with my hands. My tears well up. I failed everyone. I just bring them pain and misery."I'm sorry Mom!" i slam my fists on the floor, the pain not comparable to the one in my heart.
"Honey, sorry for what?" A voice inside my head says. "I'm sorry i failed you, Mom". And at the next second, warm hands caress me into a hug.I open my eyes to my mother, holding me. "Mom! It really is you, you're real!", I pull out from the hug to see my mother "I thought my wishes didn't work, that i'd never see you again"
In an instant the house is filled with our laughter, with our tears.
EPILOGUE
1 week later..... (Read it together with Chapter 1)
arm sunlight kisses my skin.I open my eyes to see a green-haired boy looking back at me with familiar blue eyes. "He must be in love" I think to myself. I inhale fresh humid air, only to realize that the boy is not me."My first wish came true after all".
