why does it take really long for the update file to finish ?

Poor internet connection, but please acknowledge that there has not been any game updates released in last few days.

At most of time, your client files got corrupted by something else and launcher has to re-download all fresh new copies from update server, and if you have very poor internet connection it can be quite slow.

And in most cases, if you are sure nothing has corrupted your client files, you can force doing a version check, and that way, it rebuilds fresh index and will only download if it finds anything that is corrupted (and if there's nothing corrupted) it won't download anything at all.
