I've been experimenting with sea commerce lately, and it is a viable way of farming gold, but is underutilized. The main reason for that, in my opinion, is the barrier to entry. The tax quests to unlock higher level good are tedious and annoying, but as with anything, if the reward is great enough, folks will overcome any barrier to entry to get at that reward. I actually think the tax quests are fine as is, but only if the rewards are increased.
The calculations below assume a 32 slot boat and the "average" profit for each item.
As it stands right now, a Lv25 can quickly start Low Lv Commerce with 30% tax and average 3k-8k profit per trip. This is small, but is scaled to be appropriate for Lv25.
After Lv40 and a modest grind, one unlocks Mid Lv Commerce with 20% tax. The average trip is now 8k-12k. At Lv40, and given the grind to get here, this is minimal.
Finally, Lv60 and an intense grind unlocks Hi Lv Commerce with 10% tax, which makes the average trip 3k-19k. For a Lv60, this is a terrible way to farm gold.
I propose a simple change to increase the reward. Simply add a multiplier to the prices for mid and hi level commerce. This would maintain the percent profit for each item, but give a greater incentive for hi lv commerce, and sea commerce in general. My suggestion would be x2 price for mid lv (making average trip 16-24k) and x5 for hi lv (15-100k per trip). I'd expect at this rate, there would still be few folks using sea commerce (so it won't be overpowered), but it would be reasonable enough that we might see Trader Sidorf get a little busier.
